Jewelry
Below are some common questions about Calico Unicorn jewelry
What is resin and how is it used to make jewelry at Calico Unicorn?
Resin is a durable and versatile material that is used to make jewelry at Calico Unicorn. It starts as a liquid and hardens into a solid form through a process called curing.
At my studio, I use a combination of UV resin and 2-part resin to create your unique and beautiful jewelry pieces. UV resin cures with sunlight or UV light, while 2-part resin requires a hardener to activate the curing process.
I carefully mix and pour the resin into molds, adding in various materials such as dried flowers or mica powder to create your stunning designs. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry that is both durable and beautiful.
How do I care for my resin jewelry?
Once cured, resin jewelry is durable and can last a lifetime with proper care.
- Avoid exposure to direct sunlight for prolonged periods as this may cause the resin to yellow or discolor over time.
- Avoid wearing resin jewelry while swimming or bathing as water, detergents, and other chemicals may penetrate the resin or any adhesives and cause it to become cloudy or damaged.
- Avoid exposing your resin jewelry to high heat sources to prevent warping or melting.
- Store resin jewelry in a cool, dry place away from direct heat sources to prevent warping or melting.
- Clean resin jewelry with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they may damage the resin.
- Remove resin jewelry before applying lotions, perfumes, or hairsprays as these products may react with the resin and cause it to become sticky or discolored.
- To prevent scratches, store resin jewelry separately from other jewelry pieces in a soft pouch or box.
- If your resin jewelry becomes scratched or dull, you can gently polish it with a soft cloth and a small amount of non-abrasive polish to restore its shine.
- If your resin jewelry becomes damaged or broken, contact me to arrange for repair. Do not attempt to repair it yourself as this may cause further damage.
Is your jewelry outsourced or imported?
No! I may use components from other parts of the world but I make everything myself. In fact, every single piece of jewelry is made from beginning to end by one set of skilled artisan hands.
Is your jewelry in stock?
Everything available on my website is in stock and ready to ship except certain personalized and customized items.

Breastmilk Jewelry
Below are some of are common questions about breastmilk jewelry
What is breastmilk jewelry?
I encapsulate a small amount of breastmilk into resin, creating a keepsake commemorating the bond between a mother and her child.
Do you actually use my breastmilk to make my jewelry?
Yes and no. I can't use breastmilk in its liquid form to make your jewelry. First, I have to convert it to a powder so we can use it in resin. Resin and most liquids don't play nice together but resin and most powders are fast friends.
Does my breastmilk have to be fresh?
No! As long is it's free of mold, we can use breastmilk that's been refrigerated or frozen for years.
What color will my breastmilk jewelry turn out to be?
It depends. Breastmilk is as unique as the woman it comes from - both in color and composition. Furthermore, breastmilk changes throughout your baby's age and can even change in appearance after certain foods. Whatever color your breastmilk is when it arrives is what color your final jewelry will be. Unless you want me to alter it with color or other effects.
How do I send my breastmilk and other inclusions?
My breastmilk shipping kit contains everything you will need to collect and ship your breastmilk safely to us. However, if you have all the supplies on hand and would like to purchase your own shipping, you can package it up according to our instructions and ship it to:
Calico Unicorn
PO Box 287
Shapleigh, ME 04076
Please note: please do not send more than the required amount as it is more likely to leak. Send all inclusions in separate ziplock bags and include your name and order number. Triple bag breastmilk and mail in a bubble mailer or small box.
What else can I send to be included in my breastmilk jewelry?
Besides your breastmilk, I can add other personal effects to your keepsake. Other common inclusions:
- Formula
- Cremains or ashes
- Hair
- Flowers or petals
- Umbilical cord
- Placenta
In addition to what you send us, I have over 1K ways I can personalize your jewelry.
What happens to my inclusions that you don't use?
I will send back any extra inclusions that I don’t use in your jewelry, with the exception of any extra breastmilk. Extra breastmilk powder that I don’t use is cataloged with your name and stored in case something happens to your jewelry or you want to have extra pieces made in the future. If you would like to have your extra breastmilk powder returned to you, please write a note and include it with your package or send me an email at info@calicounicorn.com and include your name and order number.
What happens after I place my breastmilk jewelry deposit order?
Once you place your breastmilk jewelry deposit order, you will be emailed a link to give some extra information so I can contact you. This form can be found if the email gets lost.
